Project: Somatic Therapy Cards

Somatic Therapy Cards, a collection of illustrated, user-friendly resources designed to guide clients through mindfulness, movement, and emotional awareness practices. This project empowered a psychologist specializing in somatic therapy to share tools that inspire connection, healing, and self-discovery.

My Approach

For this project, I set out to design a set of cards that feel approachable, calming, and clear. Each element—from the soothing color palette to the warm illustrations—was selected to reduce anxiety and encourage curiosity. The goal was to create materials that support therapy sessions while also being inviting and easy for clients to use independently.

Vision and Innovation

The vision behind the cards was to translate complex therapeutic exercises into accessible visual prompts. By combining soft, organic shapes with clear typography and relatable imagery, the cards became an intuitive tool for guiding clients through breathwork, grounding techniques, and movement-based practices. The result is a resource that feels modern, empathetic, and professional.

Identifying Unique Challenges

One of the main challenges was distilling detailed therapeutic instructions into concise, digestible content without losing accuracy or warmth. The cards needed to balance clarity with visual appeal to ensure clients of all ages and backgrounds could understand and engage with the exercises comfortably.

Resolving Complex Problems

To address these challenges, I developed a modular design system that organizes information hierarchically, highlighting key steps and benefits. Illustrations were carefully crafted to depict diverse, relatable figures in a way that feels inclusive and reassuring. This approach ensured the cards are both informative and emotionally supportive.

User-Centric Design

At the heart of the project was a commitment to user-centered design. Each card guides users step by step through a practice, combining text and imagery for maximum clarity. The tactile format encourages repeated use, supporting clients in integrating somatic techniques into their daily lives.

Meeting User Needs

Whether used in therapy sessions or as take-home resources, the cards help clients build self-awareness, reduce stress, and foster emotional resilience. For the psychologist, they offer a professional, cohesive tool that reflects her approach and expertise.

Detailed Elements and Features

  • Illustrations: Warm, calming visuals depicting somatic exercises.

  • Typography: Clean, legible type for easy reading.

  • Color Palette: Soft, muted tones to evoke relaxation and trust.

  • Format: Portable, sturdy cards designed for frequent handling.

Accessibility and Optimization

The cards were designed for print with attention to readability, tactile experience, and durability. Careful color contrast and clear hierarchy ensure the content is accessible for users with varying levels of vision or literacy.

Conclusion

Somatic Therapy Cards are more than educational materials—they’re an empathetic, empowering resource that helps people reconnect with their bodies and emotions. This project transformed therapeutic concepts into a practical, beautiful tool that supports healing and personal growth.
